Although I find the well-known wording of 1 Corinthians 13 inspiring, I really wonder whether Paul himself (with his obvious misogyny, self-importance and presumed small experience of children) could ever have lived by these extraordinary principles of real love and charity. After all, he was never directly summoned by Christ – and what was he doing, as a man in the patriarchal Middle East, in all those years before the blinding flash on the road to Damascus....
