When she lived at Taddington she had a little black hen for a pet, that she called “Beauty”. She had “Beauty” for several years until the hen died.
Chickens always had a special place in her heart. She would say in later life, “it makes the place seem more alive with a few hens scratching around with their chicks and a rooster’s crow to awaken you in the morning.” Although the eggs were gathered every day and used in meals and cooking, a bird made it into her cooking pot only for special occasions.
