Sethe had killed her little daughter Beloved, it happened when Sethe was on the run to escape slavery.In spite of the fact that Beloved is not alive she seems to be present everywhere. Not really as a ghost but as an unsolved problem.
Toni Morrison describes in her novelle the long and painful way to find peace with your past and to accept your guilt. It's an extraordninary piece of writing.
