Why

Why have apostrophes become so rare? Possibly because they discovered that in ancient Egyptian they could have a special meaning – something near akin to 'Well-beloved'. So a whole group of them have marched off to protest to the Great God of Grammar about being wasted all these years in the littleness of 'It's' and 'What's', or being subjected to the perils of possessiveness, when they could have been enjoying an equitable, two-way love affair with one of those other words...

Who knows why something happens? We might think we have the answer but my answer probably wouldn't be your answer and vice versa.

'Why, Mr Trent,' returned Dick, 'there is a proverb which talks about being merry and wise. There are some people who can be merry and can't be wise, and some who can be wise (or think they can) and can't be merry. I'm one of the first sort. I have given up asking this question.
I know, there will be no answer that will make it easier for me.
