Why have apostrophes become so rare? Possibly because they discovered that in ancient Egyptian they could have a special meaning something near akin to 'Well-beloved'. So a whole group of them have marched off to protest to the Great God of Grammar about being wasted all these years in the littleness of 'It's' and 'What's', or being subjected to the perils of possessiveness, when they could have been enjoying an equitable, two-way love affair with one of those other words...

'Why, Mr Trent,' returned Dick, 'there is a proverb which talks about being merry and wise. There are some people who can be merry and can't be wise, and some who can be wise (or think they can) and can't be merry. I'm one of the first sort. If the proverb's a good 'un, I supose it's better to keep to half of it than none; at all events, I'd rather be merry and not wise, than like you, neither one nor t'other.'
